Tis the Season to Feel Guilty

Christmas time is such a wonderful time. Snow is still new enough to provide entertainment. Lights decorate the outside and inside of homes. People go shopping to share gifts with those they love. Hot cocoa, a blanket, good book and fire is all we need to be happy. And we become more loving and kind and willing to serve those around us. It’s truly the best time of year.

So, why do I feel such deep guilt? Guilt for not giving more presents. Guilt for not making it to family get-togethers. Guilt for not being more creative in my gifts. Guilt for not getting to know my neighbors better. Guilt for not being the most perfect person I can be. Guilt for countless other reasons that are supposed to make this season special.

If this season is supposed to be so great, then why do I feel so crummy? It’s such a strange feeling.

My brother in law, Jon, once told me that for everything, there is an opposite. I’ve pondered this many times throughout my life. When I’m going through trials or hard times, I realize there’s just as much positive in the situation as there is negative, it’s just a matter of what I choose to focus on.

Well, there’s my answer. Instead of feeling guilty for not doing or giving enough, I need to focus on the true reason of this time of year. Yes, giving in the physical sense is good, but it’s the spiritual sense that means the most.

Instead of feeling guilt, I’ll be thankful. Thankful for all that God has blessed me with. I won’t feel guilt because I'm so blessed to have a loving husband, wonderful son, cute little puppy, a warm house, cars that run, clothes that fit, and food to eat. I’ll just be thankful and happy and so very glad we’re where we are this holiday season.

May you all have feelings of thankfulness and hope and happiness this holiday season.

Merry Christmas!!!
